Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist I (CPRSS I)

The Upper Midwest Indian Council on Addictive Disorders Certified Peer Recovery Specialist I (CPRS I) is an entry-level credential. This credential demonstrates basic knowledge of Peer Recovery support and the services therein and supports the training of Peer Recovery Specialists with culturally sensitive training options.

Requirements:

  1. 46 hours of Peer Recovery training (inclusive of 6 hours of ethics) from within the past 5 years that is sanctioned by a Minnesota Certification Board or Upper Midwest Indian Council on Addictive Disorders

  2. Passing score on IC&RC Peer Recovery Exam

  3. Living or working in Minnesota at least 51% of the time

  4. High School diploma, GED or higher

  5. A minimum of 6 months of recovery from lived experience in substance use and/or co-occurring mental health disorders (self-attested).

  6. 3 peer references who are certified at the UMICAD ADC I, II or III level or are licensed with the State of MN (LADC). (Note: Under ‘Some things to note’ below, other credentials are shown that can give references, but the person must be overseeing a chemical dependency/alcohol & drug counseling organization that is 51% or more American Indian-serving or on a reservation).

  7. 1 supervisor reference who is ADC II, III or LADC serving within the same American-Indian alcohol & drug counseling or chemical dependency organization and overseeing your work.

Fees:

  1. First-time certification: $400 (includes processing fee, exam fee, and 2 years of certification)

  2. 2 year renewal fee: $150

Some things to note: The credentials eligible to enroll to provide substance use disorder services are: Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC); or Upper Midwest Indian Counsel on Addictive Disorders (UMICAD) Level III certification (Submit certification. Individuals enrolling with MHCP with the UMICAD Counselor Level III credential may only provide services to individuals identifying as Native American.); or

One of the following:

  1. Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker

  2. Marriage and Family Therapist

  3. Physician

  4. Occupational Therapist

  5. Psychologist

  6. Licensed Professional Clinic Counselor

  7. Nurse Practitioner

  8. Clinical Nurse Specialist

  9. Physician Assistant

A chemical dependency program is licensed under Minnesota Statutes, chapter 245G and must follow these guidelines to be eligible for supervision hours to be approved and supervisor must have at least one of the above credentials.
